HAMLET 2 (Better than the Original)
By Sam Bobrick
Original Story by William Shakespeare
SUMMARY:
A spoof of Shakespeare’s Hamlet (only with a happy ending); told through broad silly, sitcom-style jokes and sassy, sketch comedy humor.
All actors must have good comic chops and timing. Understanding of or willingness to learn improvisation, sketch and physical comedy is a must.
Actors, must be open-minded to low-brow adult humor and some devising of scene work; and should feel comfortable in their own skin with no issues being foolish and goofy, if necessary.
A passing knowledge of Shakespeare, especially the play “Hamlet” is very helpful.
Accents will not be required.
Male identifying, Female identifying and Gender Non-Binary actors will be considered for roles that are presented as male in the script.
REHEARSALS:
Rehearsals will begin the end of December 2024,with tech week beginning Saturday, February 8, 2025.
PERFORMANCES:
Performances will run on February Friday and Saturday 14,15, 21, 22, at 7:30pm & Sundays the 16th, 23rd at 2:30pm.
CHARACTERS:
Hamlet: (18-32) Appears to be college age. Great comic timing, handsome, naive, okay with kissing and being kissed. Physically fit, sword fighting.
Gertrude: (45-65) Great comic timing. Hamlet’s Mother and wife to King Cladius. Sensual, self-centered, loves kissing Hamlet a bit too much.
Claudius: role is precast.
Ghost: (45-65) Great comic timing. Actor will be wearing makeup and costume to look like “a ghost” so can be aged up. Was the murdered husband of Gertrude and father of Hamlet. Sarcastic and out for revenge.
Horatio: (18-32) Great comic timing. Hamlet's best friend. Sincere and kind of level headed more of an athletic type. Did he have a fling with Hamlet’s girlfriend?
Polonius: (45-65) Great with one-liner comic timing. Father to Ophelia and Laertes. Sincere about being the King’s advisor. Loves to hear gossip and gives nonsense advice.
Laertes: (18-32) Wants to be a hairdresser but is actually a good big brother to Ophelia but is also a sword fighter and great at plotting revenge. Also, not a fan of Hamlet.
Ophelia: (18-32) Great comic timing. Kind of a hippy. Kind of sleeps around with members of the Court. Sometimes imbibes in the use of substances . Who’s the father of her kid?
Rosencrantz: (18-32) Great comic timing. Hamlet's college friend. Not necessarily loyal but very willing to do anything for a buck. Kinda dumb.
Guildenstern: (18-32) Great comic timing. Hamlet's college friend. Not necessarily loyal but very willing to do anything for a buck. Kinda dumb.
Francisco/Bernardo and Gravedigger: (18-65) Great comic timing. Francisco and Bernardo are to be blended into one role for an actor. Gravedigger is a totally different person. A soldier and court assistant, a tough guy who does his duty. Actor must be able to do a character that is distinctly different from the soldier, and the Gravedigger. Different voice, different age?
THE COTTAGE

BEAU: 40’s to 50’s. Perhaps the best-looking man in Britain. Role has been precast.

CLARKE: 40’s to 50’s A distinguished gent with a lover’s spirit.
DIERDRE: Late 20’s to early 30’s. An awfully pretty, sometimes wise, nincompoop. Has a great ear and skill with dialects, physical comedy and timing. Sexy and smarter than the average nincompoop.
RICHARD: 40’s. A murderous, yet gentle soul. Physically imposing (or not at all), gentle underneath a murderous facade. Great facility with accents, physical comedy - a chameleon. Role has been precast.

CHARACTERS:
Dan Goodman is Diana’s husband, and has remained her biggest supporter throughout the psychological ups and downs. It is clear that despite the fact that a lot has changed since they first met and fell in love, Dan still feels committed to taking care of Diana “through thick and thin,” even at the expense of his own mental health. Voice: Tenor, High Note: B4, Low Note: G#2/Ab2, Vocal Technique: Rock.
Diana Goodman: was traumatized by the death of her infant son seventeen years ago, and has been in and out of mental health treatment ever since. She has a diagnosis of bipolar depressive disorder with delusional episodes. At the heart of her psychosis is an inability to grieve the loss of her son, and a deep, almost unconscious unwillingness to let go. “Sharp” and “sexy”, Diana is a tremendously complex character with a fierce pop/rock belt. Voice: Mezzo-Soprano, High Note: F#5/Gb5, Low Note: G3, Vocal Technique: Rock.
Dr. Madden (played by the actor who also plays Dr. Fine, an Anesthesiologist, and Others) is Diana’s primary physician throughout the course of the show. She occasionally hallucinates that he is the lead singer of a rock band, at which point he transforms onstage into a theatrical manifestation of her delusions. Voice: Tenor, High Note: A4, Low Note: A2, Vocal Technique: Rock.
Henry: (Late Teen or Young Adult) Natalie’s seventeen-year-old musician boyfriend, Henry is incredibly committed to Natalie almost from the moment he first decides to introduce himself to her Easygoing, a bit of a stoner, and goofy to boot, Voice: Tenor, High Note: B4, Low Note: G#2/Ab2, Vocal Technique: Rock.
Natalie Goodman: (Late Teen or Young Adult) Diana and Dan’s daughter Natalie starts off as a hyper-overachiever who uses perfectionism to try to cope with her deep seated anguish over her mother’s mental illness and her parents’ negligence of her. Soon, however, she turns to acting out in all the stereotypical ways (namely, drugs and partying) in order to deal. Voice: Mezzo-Soprano, High Note: G5, Low Note: G3, Vocal Technique: Belting.
Gabe Goodman: (Late Teen or Young Adult) is the seventeen-year-old son of Diana and Dan. He is handsome, energetic, playful, sensitive: the perfect child. However, we learn early on in the musical that he is actually a figment of Diana’s imagination. Throughout the show, Gabe tries to lure Diana back to her delusions, insisting that she will never be rid of him. He acts as a kind of indicator of Diana’s mental health; when he is around, we know that things are not going well for Diana. Voice: Tenor, High Note: D5, Low Note: B2, Vocal Technique: Rock.
