About the book
Self-care isn’t a trend among Black women; it has always been a constant in our heritage. From Coretta Scott King, Betty Shabazz, and Myrlie Evers-Williams taking intentional pauses amid the Civil Rights Movement, to Rosa Parks practicing yoga, to Toni Morrison tending her gardens while writing literary classics, Bloom How You Must situates rest, joy, and community as acts of resilience and survival.
Bloom How You Must explores seven distinct pillars of wellness — physical, social, professional, spiritual, mental, emotional and creative — to encourage readers to think deeply about the origins of their wellness practices and how their past shapes the present.
An intentional mix of deep research, personal memoir and insightful interviews with more than 100 Black women ages 19-99, this book is an instruction manual to claim and shape new generational legacies around healing, wellness and self-care.
