About this Event

In 1930, a courageous, outspoken and forthright Clifton F. Richardson Sr. created the Houston Defender newspaper. Against a backdrop of economic hardship and racism, Mr. Richardson was eager to create a platform to address the concerns of Black Houstonians.

He used the paper to tell the stories that would have gone untold. He faced numerous challenges, but still prevailed. His son, C.F. Richardson Jr., took the helm of the publication until 1981 when he sold it to Sonceria "Sonny" Messiah Jiles who has continued and expanded the Defender's footprint.

Sonny Messiah-Jiles, CEO and Publisher, will be our featured speaker.
