Come celebrate our 20th anniversary with a live production of Black Voices. Live music matters and helps us grow. A suggested donation of $20 at the door is welcome, and students and children are admitted for free. Thank you. A reception will follow the concert, and all are welcome to attend. **Program:** The event will focus on the music and performers of the early 20th century.
Larry Marshall will perform excerpts from a piece about Bert Williams. Bert Williams was known as the King of Black Vaudeville. He was a trailblazer, becoming the first real African American star of Broadway and one of the first significant recording stars. His song "Nobody" was one of the first hit recordings, released in 1905.
Larry will be accompanied by Rick Cordova, who has served as the conductor for the New York Harlem Theater Company. Both Larry and Jeannine have toured with this company, performing in legendary opera houses across Europe, including those in Rome, Venice, and Modena.
Yvonne Curry, a celebrated choreographer and tap dancer, will perform music from that era. Throughout her career, Yvonne has worked on various projects in Italy and South America.
Rudy Mwangozi, who splits his time between the United States and Ghana, is a distinguished jazz musician and educator. He will perform "The Entertainer" by Scott Joplin.
Jeannine Otis, a recording artist, performer, educator, writer, and music director at St. Mark's Church, will perform music written by the great Eubie Blake. Eubie Blake composed music for Broadway, cabaret, and vaudeville, including the song "I’m Just Wild About Harry." The musical "Eubie" celebrated his music and ran on Broadway.
She will be accompanied on bass by Bim Strasberg.
