BLACK TUSK
Savannah, GA's Black Tusk specialize in a self-developed style they call, "sludgy punk metal." They combine the drive of fellow Savannah residents Baroness with the thick and murky stoner sludge of High on Fire. In 2005, they debuted the self-issued When Kingdoms Fall. Two years later The Fallen Kingdom followed (also self-released). They issued Passage Through Purgatory in 2008, their final self-issued title before signing to Relapse. In 2010 their label debut appeared as Taste the Sin. Bassist Jonathan Athon died in 2014, his final contributions were on 2016's Pillars Of Ash. Kylesa's Cory Barhorst helmed the bass chair for 2018's TCBT and subsequent tour. Following personnel changes, Black Tusk re-emerged as a quartet for 2024's The Way Forward.
CHERUBS
Formed in 1992, Cherubs emerged on the Austin, TX, LSD punk scene with a jackhammer of nightmarish, rhythm-driven song structures and plenty of Butthole Surfers whimsy and terror to keep things more than interesting. Fast forward 20 years later and the band has reformed with more energy and songwriting acumen then ever.
WAILIN STORMS
Originally formed in the unrelenting heat of Corpus Christi, Texas, WAILIN STORMS migrated east and ended up in Durham, North Carolina. Their sound is justly a mix of doom-punk and swampy rock, as elements of their prior and current surroundings culminate into a unique and volatile brew. Stamped with eerily dark and ominous vocal elements reminiscent of bluesy masters like Howlin’ Wolf and Samhain with emotive nods to Destruction Unit, Bauhaus, and Jesus Lizard, the band’s output is incessantly passionate and harrowing in its entirety.
TONGUES OF FIRE
Most bands fit cleanly within a genre, but not Tongues of Fire. At their heart they are a punk band. Their shows are unhinged, the music is straightforward and hard hitting, there is no trace of pomp or excessiveness, yet they have a well crafted feel to what they do. The production on their albums is clean and the instrumentals deceptively complex. They have many contemporaries and influences, but can’t be compared to them. Tongues of Fire are firmly themselves, and intent on moving the scene forward.
