"Which Witch is Which" Day concludes at Tampa Theatre with director Mario Bava’s first feature, the iconic Black Sunday, a strange and ornate black and white nightmare. Called the “crowning achievement of Italian gothic horror” and strongly influential on later giallo films, Black Sunday is the story of a vampiric witch named Asa, put to death in the 1600s by her own brother, only to return two centuries later to seek revenge on his descendants.
Bava was a cinematographer and special effects pioneer, working on films like I Vampiri (the first Italian horror movie of the sound era) and Hercules before getting his opportunity to direct. When given the chance, he opted to work in horror, hoping to succeed in international markets following the success of the Hammer Studios Dracula in 1958. Black Sunday, with its painterly framing and moody, chiaroscuro-esque use of light and shadow, set the standard for Italian genre cinema for a generation.
