On 23 August, we commemorate Black Ribbon Day – the European Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Stalinism and Nazism.
The date marks the anniversary of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact of 23 August 1939, the secret agreement between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union that divided Central and Eastern Europe into spheres of influence and paved the way for occupation, deportations, mass repression and the loss of freedom for millions of people.
Black Ribbon Day honours the victims of all totalitarian and authoritarian regimes and reminds us of the importance of defending democracy, human rights and the rule of law. By remembering the past, we strengthen our commitment to peace, freedom and truth for future generations.
