Black Queer & Trans Migrants and Racism in Windsor-Essex County

QTMAAWE, in partnership with the Black Scholars Institute and the Department of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Windsor, is hosting a full-day community-university gathering focused on the experiences of Black queer and trans migrants and the realities of racism and systemic barriers in Windsor-Essex. Held in recognition of the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the day will feature research presentations, community testimony, an accountability-focused panel of community leaders and local institutions, and drag performances. This initiative is designed to disseminate knowledge in order to strengthen safety, improve access to services, build collaboration, and generate practical commitments to support Black queer and trans migrants.

The event's morning session will be held in Room 1101 of the Leonard and Dorothy Neal Education Building on the University of Windsor Main Campus.

The event's afternoon session will be held at The Black Scholars Institute, University of Windsor — Lower Level, CAW Student Centre, Main Campus.

This panel brings together scholars and community-engaged researchers to explore how queer migration, queer and trans lives, and struggles for racial justice intersect across theory, transnational contexts, and local experiences — moving from conceptual framing to grounded research and public dialogue on safety, visibility, and community change in Windsor-Essex and beyond.
