Inks have a number of properties which make it an excellent medium to work with. The intense colors and fluidity of ink makes it very similar to watercolors.
Ink wash painting is a type of Chinese ink brush painting which uses black ink, such as that used in Chinese calligraphy, in different concentrations.
Drawing or Painting with pen and ink allows you to create strong areas of contrast. Most ink drawings are completed using black inks on white surfaces which leads to heavy contrast in value. Many artists choose to exploit this contrast. Others, however find it difficult to create gradations in value for this reason.
