Filippenko, a native of Goleta, fondly remembers attending many SBAC monthly meetings and star parties. An elected member of the National Academy of Sciences and one of the world's most highly cited astrophysicists, he has also contributed extensively to public education in astronomy. Voted Best Professor on the UC Berkeley campus a record nine times, in 2006 he was named the National Professor of the Year. He has produced five video courses, coauthored an award-winning astronomy textbook, and appears in more than 120 TV documentaries. He enjoys world travel and experiencing total solar eclipses (20, so far).
