About this Event
Join us on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. for a wintery historical nature walk featuring oral storytelling and shared reflection.
Together, we will explore the rich Black Canadian history of Daddy John Hall, a Jamaican Mohawk man born free around 1783 near Amherstburg, Ontario, to an escaped-slave mother and an Ojibwe father. Throughout his life, he overcame immense challenges—surviving war, slavery, and captivity—before eventually settling along the Humber River, where he lived in deep relationship with the land.
Our hike leaders Shyrai and Tramar will guide participants through the scenic Humber River Valley, beginning at James Gardens in Toronto’s west end and continuing toward Étienne Brûlé Park. Along the way, guest storyteller, Dr. Jacqueline L. Scott will offer a powerful, in-depth account of John Hall’s life.
This event prioritizes all black and indigenous individuals and youth across the diaspora living in the GTA and surrounding areas. However, members of the public who are interested in learning about black history are welcome to join us.
