Following a smash set at The Shuffle the long awaited but welcome return for Black Hats continues with a special intimate show for The Thursday Night Music Club! Black Hats are a band constructed round solid grooves from a rhythm section built on deft reggae-infused bass lines and skittering beats, with razor wire guitars with an anxious, new wave energy and a sharp and melodic punk edge that also served the likes of The Jam so well.
Their debut EP, Austerity for the Hoi Polloi (produced by Sam Williams – Plan B, Supergrass), garnered praise online from sites such as Muzu.tv, Stereoboard and Red Hot Velvet and received acclaim in local press such as the Oxford Mail and Ocelot Magazine.
Follow-up singles 'Button Down Shirt' and 'Gang of One' earned equal praise with the band finding commercial success in the US with their single 'No More Smoke...' - the song featured in both Shameless and The Magician on US TV.
Their most recent EP, Bad News Telephone (August 2019) caused a stir in the press with rave reviews across the board.
High-profile shows at Truck Festival, Wychwood, Gathering Festival and support slots with Dodgy and NME darlings, Spector, have strengthened support that the band has already had from BBC Introducing Oxfordshire and BBC 6Music (Tom Robinson). Oxford’s respected music journal, Nightshift Magazine, has sighted Black Hats as ‘ahead of the current crop.’
Following a bit of a hiatus, they are back, and as good as they ever where.
Support from Tuppenny favourite M3G.
Folk music, like all genres, has to move with the times, despite what the folk police would have you believe. M3G is the sound of that process in action. Taking a core of acoustic folk traditions, she cocoons this timeless sound with all manner of tones and textures to bring things bang up to date. She adds her captivating, ethereal vocals to create a sound that walks a fine line between folk grace, indie cool and dream-pop poise.
Live music from 8.30pm. Entry free but bring cash for the artists tip-jar.
