Black Farmers Market Workshop Series
About this Event
Black Farmers Market Workshop Series
Get Fresh Daily presents workshops at the Black Farmers Market, rooted in plants, memory, and community connection.
These are the last two markets of the season:
Saturday, October 24 and Saturday, November 7, 10am-2pm at Freedom Greens + Gardens, 5200 Pine Street.
Join us for the market, then stay for a workshop at 11am.
Both workshops are donation-based, with a recommended donation of $10 to help cover workshops costs. No one will be turned away. Please contact us at [email protected] for more information.
Workshop 1: Saturday, October 24, 2026 | 11am-12:30pm
Fire Cider: Memories & Making
A Make + Take Workshop with The Lavender Room Apothecary & Library
About this workshop
Join The Lavender Room Apothecary & Library to learn how to prepare fire cider, a traditional, pungent herbal tonic used to support the immune and respiratory systems through the fall and winter months. You will make your own and take it home.
Participants are invited to share their own memories and experiences with traditional kitchen medicine. We’ll trade stories as we work with our hands.
Your facilitator
Tajah is a community herbalist, urban grower, and educator whose work is rooted in Black literature and culture.
The market that day
We’ve chosen to Celebrate Black Farmers during this penultimate market event. We’ll be playing Black Farmers Market Bingo. The first 25 winners get free market bucks to spend at the market.
Shop fresh fall produce from growers you can meet and thank by name, and warm your hands with hot apple cider (while supplies last).
Come shop the harvest. Come make some medicine. Or simply spend a little time with us in the garden.
Workshop 2: Saturday, November 7, 2026 | 11am-12:30pm
Writing Ancestral Seeds
Of Land and Water: Writing Workshops with Bitter Kali
About this workshop
What did they plant so we could grow?
Join Bitter Kali for Writing Ancestral Seeds, part of the Of Land and Water writing series. This workshop explores ways of connecting with ancestral plants and foodways through art, writing, and gardening.
Together, we will read and work through writing exercises about the plant stories we have inherited from our lineages: what we carry, what was planted for us, and what we pass forward.
Please bring a pen and notebook.
Your facilitator
Bitter Kali is a writer, landworker, and founder of Star Apple Nursery whose work is rooted in soil, seeds, and diaspora heritage crops.
The market that day
This is the final Black Farmers Market of the season. The garden will be quieter and the tables a little lighter, and that is the season too. We’ll have late greens, storage crops, and hot cider. This day is less about how much is left and more about what we’ve gathered along the way: the growers we know by name, the food we’ve shared, and the people who keep coming back.
One more chance to sit in the garden before we let it rest.
