About this Event
Black Coffee Table | Stories, Space & Belonging

Who gets to tell our stories? Who decides where we belong? And what does it mean to claim space for ourselves?

As part of Black Coffee Table, a four-day gathering celebrating Black art, design, literature, and community, Black Film Club Collective presents two documentary screenings honoring the intellectual and creative legacies of Zora Neale Hurston and Toni Morrison.

Across two evenings, we explore the work of two extraordinary Black women whose writing, cultural criticism, and imagination continue to shape how we understand identity, memory, home, and belonging.

Thursday, November 19 | 6:15 PM

Zora Neale Hurston: Claiming a Space

A portrait of the groundbreaking writer, folklorist, and anthropologist whose commitment to documenting Black life challenged conventional ideas of whose stories deserve to be preserved. Through her research and writing, Hurston insisted on the beauty, complexity, and cultural significance of everyday Black experiences.

Saturday, November 21 | 6:00 PM

The Foreigner's Home | Toni Morrison

Inspired by Toni Morrison's 2006 exhibition at the Louvre, The Foreigner's Home examines race, displacement, identity, and the meaning of home. Through Morrison's conversations with artists and archival material, the film considers the power of art to challenge boundaries and imagine new possibilities for belonging.

More Than a Screening

These films invite us to consider storytelling as an act of preservation, imagination, and self-definition.
