This December we will be bringing everything you need for stocking-fillers, under-the-tree gifts, and even those tricky winter baby birthdays! There will be artists and creators trading all day, we will have open mic opportunities - sign up on the official website - as well as a raffle with prizes donated by the traders from the day. We've also got The Caribbean Kitchen serving up that soul-food goodness!
Our Headline performance - Elvie - is a rising star in the realm of R&B, drawing inspiration from the likes of Summer Walker and traditional Neo-soul icons such as D'Angelo, Elvie infuses her music with a timeless blend of emotional depth and sonic innovation. Her music serves as a reflection of life's complexities she’s faced, exploring themes of love, heartbreak, and self-discovery with honesty and vulnerability. Elvie's upbringing across culturally rich cities like Liverpool, London and Brighton has deeply shaped her musical style.
KWANZAA
Kwanzaa is an African American and pan-African holiday which celebrates family, community and culture. It was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, a professor of Africana Studies Kwanzaa, a seven-day cultural festival, which begins December 20th and ends January 1st. It joins communitarian values and practices of Continental African and African American culture.
During the holiday, families and communities organize activities around the Nguzo Saba (The Seven Principles): Umoa (Unity). Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity) and Imani (Faith). Participants also celebrate with feasts (karamu), music, dance, poetry, narratives and end the holiday with a day dedicated to reflection and recommitment to The Seven Principles and other central cultural values.
Now we know we’re celebrating a little early, but it’s not just about the celebration but recognition of other cultures holidays during the winter season, because there are many! So here at BBM we do our best to not only celebrate but educate and give acknowledgement. As part of the Kwanzaa celebration, come and listen to music, dance, hear poetry and stories we have to tell in this safe space.
