An out-of-work ronin arrives at the manor of local feudal Lord Iyi, requesting his permission to commit ritualistic suicide on the property. Lord Iyi’s clansmen are doubtful of the ronin’s integrity, believing he is merely seeking charity. The ronin uses the opportunity to share the events and circumstances that led to this fateful moment, with the hopes of finding a worthy second to deliver his final death blow.
Winner of the Cannes Film Festival Special Jury Prize and starring the late Tatsuya Nakadai, Masaki Kobayashi’s critically acclaimed HARAKIRI remains one of the greatest samurai films of all time. Its interlocking stories serve as a poignant exploration of the Samurai code and a powerful depiction of one’s agency in the face of a corrupt, unjust system.
