Black and trans perspectives in the current conjuncture (IN-PERSON)

In recent years, racism and transphobia have been increasingly mainstreamed within UK politics, with hard-won protections coming under attack. Yet Black and trans perspectives hold promise for deepening understanding and building new solidarities in the face of shared vulnerabilities.

This free workshop explores how art, culture and scholarship produced by Black and trans people can help us to understand our current political moment. Drawing on Stuart Hall, we understand this as ‘a conjuncture’: ‘a period during which the different social, political, economic and ideological contradictions that are at work in society come together to give it a specific and distinctive shape.’ How can Black and trans perspectives make sense of the current conjuncture? And what is the role of artistic and cultural production in responding?

The workshop includes panel discussions and participatory activities, featuring Black and trans scholars and artists from across the UK. We aim to bring contemporary queer politics into dialogue with Hall’s classic work, to explore the potential and historical resonances.

The event is free to attend and can be joined either in person or online.
