Rhymes and Reckonings
A Live Storytelling Experience + Community Activation
Rhymes & Reckonings is more than a performanceâitâs a transformative evening that blends live music, storytelling, and community engagement into one immersive experience.
Through a dynamic âTED Talk meets concertâ format, Zakiyyah invites audiences into the heart of her debut album African Import, unpacking the stories, truths, and social realities woven into each song.
But the experience doesnât stop at the stage.
Beyond the music and storytelling, Rhymes & Reckonings centers community action. The stage will also highlight Black-led nonprofits and grassroots organizations doing critical work. These changemakers will share their missions and offer tangible ways for attendees to get involvedâfrom volunteering to advocacy to direct support.
What to Expect:
â Live Performances of songs from African Import
â Storytelling & Reflections that unpack the meaning behind the music
â Interactive Audience Moments that invite you into the conversation
â Community Spotlights featuring organizations driving impact
â Activation Spaces to connect, learn, and take action
Why This Experience Matters:
Rhymes & Reckonings is rooted in the belief that art can move peopleâbut community moves change. This is a space to not only feel, but to reflect, connect, and leave with a deeper understanding of both the world around you and your role within it.
You wonât just experience the music.
Youâll experience the messageâand the movement behind it.
The Open Doors Performing Arts Residency is part of the Artist Pathways Project, the inaugural program of the Arts Action Consortium, a collaboration of six Boston-based cultural organizations: Arts & Business Council, Assets for Artists, Bloom Arts Strategy, Dunamis, Midday Movement Series, and Ăgora Cultural Architects.
