Birmingham Vegans started in July 2013 when Greg Fuller hosted the first meetup on the patio at Whole Foods. Since then, the group has hosted hundreds of gatherings highlighting all the vegan energy in the Birmingham area. We have organized vegan festivals, held regular meetups at local restaurants, hosted amazing potlucks, organized kayaking and hiking adventures, held picnics, featured talks from authors, had chef demonstrations, shown vegan-themed films, and sponsored canned food drives. Numerous friendships have come from this group, and community has grown around a shared sense of purpose. We’ve connected with 4,000 followers on Facebook and more than 1,700 members on Meetup.
As always, everyone is welcome to attend; just remember to order vegan, which is easy to do at Taj. Here are all the fully vegan options:
Entrées:
—Baingan Bharta (grilled eggplant with onions, tomatoes, and fresh herbs)
—Vegetable Badami (mixed vegetables in ground almond & cashew in poppy seed coconut sauce)
—Aloo Bengan (cubes of eggplant & potatoes sauteed with onions and specially roasted spices)
—Aloo Gobi (fresh cauliflower florets cooked with potatoes and fresh spices)
—Chana Masala (garbanzo beans blended with freshly roasted spices and tamarind pulp)
—Dal Makhni (black lentils seasoned with fresh herbs)
—Tarka Dal (yellow lentils seasoned with fresh herbs)
—Mixed Vegetable (seasoned fresh vegetables cooked with fenugreek, basil leaves, and other herbs)
Appetizers:
—Dal Shorba (puree of lentils with fresh herbs and spices)
—Tomato Shorba (tangy tomato soup with fresh herbs and spices)
—Vegetable Pakora (fresh vegetables in batter of roasted spices and yellow gram flour, fried crisp)
—Gobi Pakora (cauliflower florets crisp-fried in spiced gram-flour batter)
—Chili Pakora (sliced jalopenos crisp-fried in spiced gram-flour batter)
—Onion Bhaji (thinly sliced onions coated in spiced gram flour batter, deep fried)
—Palak ki Tikkiya (spinach & potato patties with herbs, spices, and a medley of chutneys)
—Samosa Chaat (street food crisp pancakes stuffed with mixed vegetables on bed of chickpeas)
—Sev Batata Puri (biscuit-like street food covered in vegetables, with gram flour straws, mint, chutney)
—Bhel Puri (mixture of rice puffs, gram flour straws, & leavened flour sticks in vegetables & chutney)
Sides:
—Chapati (unleavened flatbread also known as roti)
—White Basmati Rice (plain white fluffy basmati rice with peas and spices)
—Kachumar Salad (onions, cucumber, tomatoes, and green chilis in lemon dressing)
—Ring Salad (fine-sliced onions, cucumber, tomatoes, and green chilis in lemon dressing)
—Tossed Salad (assortment of fresh mixed greens in zesty house dressing)
