Birgufest is the annual national event of the city of Birgu, organized by the Birgu Local Council. It is spread on two days on the second weekend of October, Friday and Saturday. Birgufest hosts the famous event of Birgu by candlelight, an unforgettable night and experience were the streets of Birgu are switch off from every street lights and lit only by candles. Thousands of candles light the streets of Birgu while professional musicians play around the streets of Birgu. Concerts take place in churches as these open their doors for visitors. Museums and other historical sites are opened to the public at a low fare. Traditional food is served by local voluntary organizations. Exhibitions take place in various public buildings around Birgu. A short film festival also takes place during the event on Saturday, between the colorful lit bastions of Birgu. Birgufest also includes an artisan market and other activities during the whole night.
