Learning about what birding can teach us about community
About this Event

Nature is for the birds! In this community bird sit, participants will become familiar with our local "backyard birds" and migratory birds and be able to identify them with sight and sound. This seated workshop will allow us to discuss community and bird behavior across themes of migration, symbolism, and more.

This gathering will end with a moment of reflection and journaling in response to a writing prompt provided by the artist.

June Prompt:

Blue Jays are known for their ability to mimic other birds’ sounds, for their loud calls, and their ability to drive bomb a predator. Some see Blue Jays as bullies because they will work together to attack a hawk until the hawk flies away. Some see Blue Jays as protectors for this same reason. Take a moment to reflect on the bully/protector dichotomy and how perception can blur those lines.

What’s Included:

  • 3 pairs of share binoculars

What to Bring:

  • Binoculars (optional)
  • Download Merlin Bird ID app to help identify birds by sound and sight (optional)
  • Download eBird to keep track of the birds you see (optional)
