Birding Cruises on the Sam Patch and the RiverieBirds abound on the Genesee River and the Erie Canal, so from June through October, Corn Hill Navigation provides Birding Cruises with local guides Randi and Nic Minetor. The Minetors’ books on birds and birding are distributed nationwide by Falcon Guides and Quick Reference Publishing.
Most cruises generate sightings of 20 or more bird species. Great blue heron, great egret, and belted kingfisher are common sightings, and most summer cruises produce barn and tree swallows, green heron, northern cardinal, blue jay, American robin, mallard, Canada goose, and woodpeckers. Bald eagles frequent the Genesee River, often showing us their hunting prowess, and some cruises discover osprey fishing along the waterways. Tree birds can include orioles, sparrows, and many smaller birds.
These are great cruises for beginning birders. Be sure to bring your binoculars!
