Birding By the Bay
About this Event
Join us for a FREE 2.1-mile birding trip around Pleasure Bay and Castle Island. We will look for shorebirds, hear from a DCR Conservation Biologist about shorebird protection, and enjoy lunch together. This event is intended for BIPOC. Disabled and LGBTQ+ BIPOC birders encouraged. All experience levels are welcome!
What we provide:

- lunch - from Fresh Food Generation - chicken and vegetarian options available (reach out for more information)
- raffle prizes from Brookline Bird Club & NOCS Provisions
- 1-year Brookline Bird Club memberships for all participants
What to bring:

Route and accessibility information
Walking Route
2.14 mi. loop on a concrete path that is 5 ft wide or wider. There are benches and shade at the meeting spot and Head Island.
Restrooms
- 0.15 mi. from the meeting spot. Across the street in a bathhouse building - 1 accessible bathroom and 6 other stalls. Baby changing stations in the men's and women's rooms.
- 0.84 mi. from the meeting spot (near the midway point)
- 2 accessible portable and 4 other portable toilets
- 1 accessible toilet and 5 other stalls in the bathhouse at Castle Island
Water fountains
Bottle filling stations and drinking fountains at 0.03 mi., 0.8 mi., and 0.84 mi. from meeting spot
Benches
From the meeting spot to 1.10 mi., 60+ benches 20 - 50 feet apart at many points. Some have shade from trees. 20 benches at 1.72 mi. at the Head Island gazebo. At 1.91 mi. 1 bench, with no shade. All benches have backs; some have armrests. 10+ benches at the meeting spot and 2 accessible picnic tables.
Noise
There is some traffic noise and airplane engine noise from planes flying overhead to the nearby airport.
Transportation & Parking
- Take #7 bus outbound to City Point, and stop at the E Broadway @ Farragut Rd stop. This bus is accessible from the Green, Red, and Orange line. A .3 mile walk to the meeting spot down Farragut Rd toward William J Day Blvd.
- Take #11 bus outbound to City Point, and stop at the Farragut Rd opp E Sixth St stop. This bus is accessible from the Broadway stop on the Red Line. A .1 mile walk to the meeting spot down Farragut Rd toward William J Day Blvd.
- Blue Bike rack on Farragut Rd at E. 6th Street. There are bike racks to lock a personal bike at the Pleasure Bay DCR parking lot.
- Free parking is available along William J Day Blvd and the Pleasure Bay DCR parking lot. The Pleasure Bay DCR parking lot has two accessible spots by the gazebo. These spots allow for van access between the 2 spots. There are 46 total parking spots.
