Join us at Maplewood Flats for our monthly educational bird walk focused on seeing birds and their interconnection to the site.
Hosted by avid birder and horticulturalist Sam MacTavish. Sam will be taking attendees along the trails to show you what types of birds can be seen and discuss the importance of Indigenous plants for wild birds and what habitat restoration work is being done at the flats.
A variety of bird species call Maplewood Flats their year-round home. Birds we see might include:
• Nesting tree swallows and purple martins
• Young birds, including ducklings
• Early southbound migratory sandpipers
• and more!
Binoculars are available to rent ($5 add-on).
Meet at the nature house and finish at the nature house. Maximum number of people: 10-15
About our Trail Host:
Sam has loved nature from a young age. In 2011, Sam’s grandparents took him birding and, from that day, he was hooked on birds. Through his volunteer work with the Environmental Youth Alliance, Sam developed a strong interest in plants. This passion led him to pursue his education in horticulture. Sam loves to share his knowledge of nature with others. Sam has worked at the Coast Salish Native Plant Nursery and is part of the Wild Bird Trust habitat restoration team.
