BIOTOOPIA'23 - Art, Science and Biosphere Hybrid Conference at Tallinn Botanic Garden/Online & Maarjamäe Wasteland

☘️The 3rd year Biotoopia conference on May 11-13 focuses on UNDERGROUND NETWORKS.

International and local researchers and artists who have been invited to present at Biotoopia will begin to assemble underground networks during the first two days of the conference (11.05.-12.05) held at the Tallinn Botanic Garden and online. The lectures and discussion panels will include participation from the audience. Biotoopia conference is part of a Tallinn - European Green Capital 2023 programme.

We are only beginning to understand that humanity’s wellbeing is absolutely dependent on the wellbeing of other life forms and biocenoses. The self-organising communication networks of the biosphere ensure the stability of satisfactory living conditions, on the levels of nutrient cycles, soil, atmospheric and climatic phenomena. Ecosystems are kept verdant by the syngenetic and intertwined relationships between microbes, algae, mushrooms, plants, insects and all other life forms.

Most of these relationships we cannot see nor measure. Nevertheless, these underground networks are influencing us directly. All terrestrial wellbeing is dependent on the life processes that occur within the soil. Everything that dies is fermented and turned into the juice of new life, mushroom mycelia grow together with plant roots, forming highly complex nutrient and information exchange channels, and difficult-to-measure organic signalling systems keep the processes in balance.

This year’s Biotoopia tries to peek into the depths of the underground networks, in order to better understand and protect them, and to recognise that humans, too, are connected to the living environment and each other through many entwined underground networks.

The programme is in English and the first two days will also be accessible via online conference platform.

Tallinn Botanic Garden conference tickets at regular rates are no longer available. But a number of sponsors and online tickets are still available here: https://biotoopia.ee/attend/

We have a new update since 2.05. Please be aware that due to the high interest of our programme our partner, the Estonian news site Postimees has provided us a chance to spread awareness more widely by offering a live stream of our online conference. You might not actively participate in it, download materials, and you couldn’t go back and rewatch it. If you purchased a ticket online and believe the only view option is also for you and would prefer a refund, please contact us. Nevertheless, we would be really grateful if you could still contribute to the technical development of our hybrid platform. As a citizen-based organisation, we rely heavily on grants and ticket sales and of course our great partners who offer these kind of possibilities for reaching people with all income levels.

The whole programme is announced on our home page www.biotoopia.ee. We have opened the Library section on our webpage where you can find previous Biotoopia events' presentations.

The art programme will take place on 13.05 at Maarjamäe Wasteland area. See the event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/870453537383329/

The curator of the Biotoopia'23 conference programme is renowned Estonian artist Peeter Laurits. This year the art programme is curated and organised by Vaim Sarv and Anette Pärn. The graphic design is made by Martin Rästa.

Biotoopia synopsis
We are living in a time of great changes. The pressure our civilization exerts on living environments has exceeded a reasonable limit, and the imbalanced natural processes are presenting us with increasingly unpleasant surprises. We are becoming aware of our responsibility for the life of the planet, but we cannot solve the accumulated ecological problems with technology alone. We need to achieve cooperation and good relations with other participants of the biosphere, learn their sign systems, and cooperate with them, respectfully.
Biotoopia is a citizens’ initiative in Estonia that seeks to build networks between the arts, sciences and biotic communities.
Biotoopia propagates the power of multispecies communities by shifting patterns of thought and behaviour in order to sustain a flourishing future for all.
* We borrowed the name from the 1995 exhibition curated by Sirje Helme, Eha Komissarov, and Ando Keskküla, the thematic developments of which we will continue.
