Biodiversity & Competitiveness in the Food System

Biodiversity is a central EU priority. So is global competitiveness and economic interests.

In practice, these two ambitions meet in real life situations: A farmer is asked to reduce chemical pesticides, rotate crops, or set aside parts of their land for biodiversity, all while facing tight margins and market pressures. A product developer wants to source more diverse crops, but needs stable volumes and uniform quality. A policymaker designs incentives, knowing that too much flexibility means less impact, and too much regulation risks pushback.

We are curious: can biodiversity and competitiveness be aligned in today’s food system? When does it work and when are trade-offs unavoidable?

Marin Rose: Biodiversity in the food system – what are we actually talking about?

Biodiversity loss is one of the most pressing threats for our food system. It’s shaping policy and sustainability strategies, but what are we actually talking about?

We're excited to be joined by Marin Rose, with a PhD in crop diversification and food security. Today, she is coordinator of CLEVERFOOD, a project which connects actors across the food value chain to drive a fair, circular and plant-forward food system.

Biodiversity can certainly be a complex and to some extent even feel like an abstract goal. Marin will help us brake it down.

Cindie Christiansen: The gains and pains of farming for biodiversity

We're also excited to welcome Cindie Christiansen, co-founder and executive director of Top 50 Farmers – a community platform spotlighting European farmers who are leading the shift toward regenerative agriculture, healthy soils and biodiversity.

Her mission is “to give farmers the same rock-star recognition as chefs in gastronomy,” highlighting those going against the status quo, inspiring the next generation of farmers.

Cindie will share real-life cases, exploring the arguments these farmers live by, the challenges they face, and the ways they inspire others to rethink farming.

About the Interdisciplinary Future Food Network
This open event is part of the Interdisciplinary Future Food Network (IFFN), a project funded by the Green Development and Demonstration Program (GUDP) under the Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries of Denmark. The network unites academics and stakeholders across the food value chain to address key challenges for the Danish food system, in the context of climate change.
