Bioblitz 2026 UT's Brackenridge Field Laboratory

This is a self-guided drop-in event suitable for ages 11 and up. Special programing for all ages will be available from 10am-12pm.

A bioblitz is a community event pairing citizen scientists with experts through the iNaturalist app. The goal is to document as many species as possible in a specified area during a predefined time frame. This work is critical to monitoring the long-term biodiversity of an area and is a great opportunity for people to learn more about their local environment.

If this is your first bioblitz, WELCOME! We recomend visiting BFL's bioblitz between 10am-12pm for tutorials and tips from experts.

What to bring:

You'll need your smartphone, drinking water, bug spray, and appropriate hiking clothing & closed-toed shoes for the weather and terrain. This year's bioblitz focuses on an area of BFL that contains single-track, rocky paths and some steep drop offs. This trail is for ages 11 and up.

• Test out your Seek & iNaturalist apps on a short accessible path
• Participate in hands-on educational activities
• View insects from UT's Entomology Collection
• Learn how scientists use iNaturalist for a bioblitz and how you can use it to enhance your everyday explorations
• Hear tips on how to avoid hazards along the trail from BFL experts
• Get a sneak peak at what you may find this time of year and where to look

8:30 PM-10:00 PM Blacklight Survey

See how BFL changes after dark during the blacklighting insect survey.

This activity is best for ages 11 and up. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a custodial adult.

Available all day: restrooms, water station, registration table, iNaturalist bioblitz 2026 leaderboard tracking, BFL expert staff available for questions.
