About this Event

Bioart in Rockaway! Make art with living organisms!
Participants will create living artworks from gene edited microbes in Petri dishes. The microbes have been engineered to display vibrant colors from sea creatures like jellyfish, sea anenome, and coral. The Petri dish paintings created by participants will be incubated and photographed over the following days. The photos will then be pieced together to make an animated clip of collaborative bioart that will premiere at the Rockaway Film Festival on August 21, 2024.
“Biogenetic Blooms: Bioart in Rockaway” free workshops are made possible through a 2024 Queens Art Fund (QAF) New Work Grant awarded to Karen Ingram for her project “Biogenetic Blooms: Collaborations with Genetically Modified Yeast". The grant is administered by New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) in partnership with the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA).

    ABOUT THE PROJECT:
“Biogenetic Blooms: Collaborations with Genetically Modified Yeast" is a series of floral inspired paintings made with genetically modified S. cerevisiae (common name: “Baker’s yeast”) on Petri dishes. These paintings are both beloved pet and living artwork. For more information about "Biogenetic Blooms", visit Karen Ingram.
Karen is proud to represent the borough of Queens, and to bring "Biogenetic Blooms: Bioart in Rockaway" to Rockaway Beach in a collaborative piece exploring our relationship with genetics, nature, and each other. The Queens Arts Fund offers project grants to Queens-based artists, artist collectives, and small non-profit organizations of all artistic disciplines to support the local production of artwork and cultural programs that highlight, engage, and bolster the borough of Queens. It is administered by New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) in partnership with the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA).
