Selected as one of the Globe and Mail’s top 100 books of 2024, the book features 38 of the roughly 150 pieces of journalism Gallant wrote as a young reporter for The Montreal Standard between 1944 and 1950, before leaving for Europe and establishing herself as one of the twentieth century’s finest writers of short fiction. Gallant’s early journalism with the Standard has never been in print since 1950; it’s now becoming increasingly clear how her early apprenticeship at the Standard anticipated her long and celebrated career as a writer of short stories.
Introduced by Neil Besner, annotated by Bill Richardson, and with an Afterword by Marta Dvor᷇ák, this new collection opens a new window onto Gallant’s fictional practice and perspective. Mariam Bernstein will read one of the selections; Neil Besner and Bill Richardson will follow Bernstein’s reading with a conversation moderated by Catherine Hunter about Gallant, her journalism, and her wide influence on English-language writing in the postwar period.
