Like the music they play, Big Love Car Wash is full of dichotomies. They’re whimsical, yet serious. Fanciful, but pragmatic. Filled with lofty dreams, while grounded in reality — and fully aware that one singular truth matters above all: When you finally find the perfect crew of wizards and conjure real musical magic, you will do whatever it takes to share that magic with the world.
After releasing their debut record "Daydream" in June, the band rose to new heights on their first national tour, during which they secured 2nd prize at the prestigious Telluride Bluegrass Festival band contest, which has launched acts such as the Chicks and the Fretliners.
Sol Chase (mandolin, bouzouki, vocals), Everett Wren (vocals, fiddle, dobro, lap steel, guitar, percussion), David Rabinowicz (vocals, guitar, piano) and Taylor Turner (upright and electric bass) discovered that magic the first time they shared a stage together in 2022. Leaning into their love of bluegrass, folk, jazz, Celtic and rock idioms, they honed an Americana-oriented, bluegrass-steeped sound rooted in tradition, but boldly exploratory. That sound takes flight on their self-produced debut album, Daydream, recorded at the fabled Arlyn Studios in Austin, where most of the band is based (Chase splits his time between Ireland and the U.S.).
Daydream’s 16 tracks capture their bluegrass essence — precise, yet organic — while reflecting the wide-ranging influences and diverse personalities of four friends who now refer to themselves as “found family.” Themes of community, empathy, social justice, and self-reflection weave throughout the album. It’s story driven music with a message that asks us to dig deeper into the fabric of life and love ourselves and one another whole-heartedly.
Even the band’s name is a reference to something like a group hug. It came from late Yonder Mountain String Band frontman and jamgrass luminary Jeff Austin, one of Chase’s major influences. Chase had once heard Austin announce to an adoring audience that the vibe he was receiving from them felt like moving through “a big love car wash.” The sentiment resonated with all four bandmates, who particularly enjoy the energy exchange of live performances.
“I've never been a part of something that's felt this natural and honest,” says Rabinowicz.
