The "Big Lick" gait is not natural; it's a result of a cruel practice called "soring," where pain is intentionally inflicted on a horse's legs and hooves using caustic chemicals, blisters, or other devices. Chains are often used to agitate these sensitive areas, forcing the horse to lift its legs unnaturally high to avoid pain. This creates the "Big Lick" and is a product of immense suffering.
