About this Event
** The event is free, and open to everyone. Refreshments will be provided, courtesy of Oaklands Community Association. **
The purpose of this session is to take a step back and help connect the dots between our housing, transportation, and neighbourhood design choices in making great places to live and achieving our community goals. Expert panelists will explore overarching themes that link these concepts and paint a picture of what our communities could look like in the future.
This event is organized in partnership with the Oaklands Community Association and Livable Victoria, a non-partisan advocacy group which aims to provide a balanced perspective and help foster more thoughtful dialogue, advocate for positive change, and encourage bold leadership during this year's municipal election
Our expert panel includes:
- Dr. Trevor Hancock: Trevor is public health physician and retired in 2018 from his position as a Professor and Senior Scholar at the School of Public Health and Social Policy, University of Victoria. In the 1980s he helped to create the global healthy cities movement, and has been an internationally recognised leader in this area for almost 40 years. In recent years he has focused on the concept of a 'One Planet' community/region as a way to integrate the concepts of healthy and sustainable communities, and in retirement has started a new NGO, Conversations for a One Planet Region, to explore and popularise these ideas locally.
- Barb Myers: Barb is currently a Senior Project Planner with Wiser Projects with a focus on non-profit and institutional clients in the areas of housing and community development and she has been active as a planner with private firms in the architectural sector since 1980. Barbara's expertise in urban planning and accessibility is widely sought after and she is currently a Governor of the National Trust for Canada; a Board member of the Council for Canadian Urbanism, the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects Accreditation Council; and past Chair of the Editorial Board of Plan Canada, Canadian Institute of Planners. She is a Master of City Planning graduate of the Faculty of Architecture, University of Manitoba and attended Queen's and McGill Universities for undergraduate degrees.
- Julian West: Julian is the owner of Urban Thrive Developments, a Victoria-based social enterprise housing development company that specializes in car-free missing middle housing. He has a degree in economics from Vancouver Island University (with honors) and ongoing studies in urban land economics and sustainable building practices. Julian has a wide range of project management experience, including public-private partnerships and collaborations between multiple levels of government, and brings a strong combination of communication, organizational and planning skills to his engagements. Julian currently sits on the Pacific Montessori Society Board of Directors, is a member of One Planet Saanich, and is a strong advocate for sustainable urban development across the region.
- Our forth guest speaker will be announced soon. Stay tuned!
