Big Book Book Club: "Schattenfroh" by Michael Lentz

Big Book Book Club: it sounds just like what it is! Huge novels like Ulysses or Middlemarch might seem intimidating, but those bad boys are more afraid of you than you are of them! In manageable portions, we'll read some big ol' brick-sized books — some new, some old, and meet up once a month to talk about 'em. Each meeting will be led by Joe at our Bushwick store.
For our first meeting, we'll be reading Schattenfroh, written by Michael Lentz and translated from the German by Max Lawton. Narrated by a man sitting in complete darkness, strapped to a machine made by the mysterious Frightbearing Society — a machine that turns our narrator's real-time thoughts into the very text of Schattenfroh as he thinks them — Lentz's English-language debut interrogates our ideas of how written history, and therefore the world, is made.
