Let’s be honest: The things we say and the way we act often aren’t consistent with what we say we believe in church on Sunday. The members of the first-century church in Corinth struggled with this very same problem. Even though the Apostle Paul himself had established that community of Christians and continued to stay in touch with them, their failure to live lives consistently guided by the teachings of Jesus were frequent, embarrassing, and sometimes painfully public. So, Paul wrote to them to help them (and us) become a better community of disciples.
In his First Letter to the Corinthians, we find that Paul’s primary focus is helping the Corinthians to bring their behavior more “in tune” with the faith they professed. He accomplishes this “tuning” by reviewing key Christian beliefs that help shape righteous living, and points out that moral failures frequently flow from flawed beliefs.
In this new 13-session study, we will study the advice Paul gave the Corinthian church. A study guide (available for purchase at the first class for $6) includes the full text of each session’s portion of 1 Corinthians, helpful notes on important points of the passage, links to other scriptures that further reveal the message Paul is giving, and questions to guide and deepen our understanding of the text.
