This is a free community event as part of the 2025 Biamp Portland Jazz Festival.
Bang Bang is a brass and drums ensemble that plays the music of trumpet player Sam Dechenne. Inspired by the sounds of international brass bands and Jazz ensembles, Funk and Reggae horn sections, West African and Latin American drumming, and Western chamber music, their sound is truly their own.
The rhythm section interweaves grooves and swaps roles throughout the performance for a visual and audible experience. Drum set, Cahon, Timbales, Congas, Surdo, and a variety of mixed percussion make up the intricate drum beats you’ll hear at a concert. The lower brass section plays the bass role, rhythmic comping, inner harmonies, and melodies. Riding the musical wave on top is the trumpet, playing the main melody and voice of the band.
With Bang Bang, you’ll hear melodic and fiery solos from every member of the band, soft and intimate three-part horn section compositions, exciting rhythm breaks, catchy melodies, and horn riffs that will keep your ears open and your toes tapping.
