About this Event
Bia Ferreira is a Brazilian singer, composer, multi-instrumentalist and artivist. Her music, which she defines as "MMP — Música de Mulher Preta" (Black Woman Music),discusses topics such as feminism, anti-racism and homophobia. She claims her music is created to generate "discomfort" that in turn generates "movement", at the same time that she tries to write songs pleasant enough to get her message across. Her lyrics have been described as "escrevivência" ("writing x lived experience"), a concept by Conceição Evaristo.
The Lesbitarian Church
Bia Ferreira invites the world to celebrate Mothers Day with a solo concert dedicated to women and the church she founded. The Lesbitarian Church is a space for those who have been cast out or targeted by Pentecostal and Protestant denominations. The name was taken from her 2019 album “Igreja Lesbiteriana, Um Chamado” (Lesbian Church, A Calling).
"A calm, meditative prayer starts off the night, with Ferreira’s voice brewing a quiet storm. “May I be an instrument of art,” she sings, her hypnotic voice flowing into the crowd, grounding them in the moment. The first song is her invocation; a prayer to harness the transformative power of art.
