Frenetic chronicle of the birth of rave culture: 24 Hour Party People with live music from Spanish Horses, a part of BFI's 'Rip it Up'
About this Event

Part of the BFI's "Rip it Up" season, Theatreship, in partnership with Phase Magazine, is proud to host a series of screenings celebrating the changing face of youth rebellion. In this season we dive into the youth driven movements which have defined our cultural identity, the agonies and ecstasies of growing up in Britain, and the issues facing the next generation. For this event we are screening 24 Hour Party People, a frenetic, hilarious chronicle of the Madchester music scene and the birth of rave culture, followed by a live performance from Spanish Horses, bringing their melodically ambitious blend of post-punk edge and shoegaze haze.

24 Hour Party People Rating: 18 Duration: 117 minutes Cast: Steve Coogan, Paddy Considine, Shirley Henderson, Sean Harris, Lennie James, Andy Serkis, John Simm 24 Hour Party People (2002) Directed by Michael Winterbottom, this brilliantly chaotic and fourth-wall-breaking film follows ambitious local newsman Tony Wilson as he helps spark a musical revolution in the north of England. Beginning with a legendary 1976 Sex Pistols gig and spanning to the euphoric, ecstasy-fueled heights of the early 90s acid house era, the film tracks the rise and fall of Factory Records and the iconic Haçienda nightclub. Charting the careers of legendary acts like Joy Division, New Order, and the Happy Mondays, it captures the raw, anarchic energy of a working-class youth culture that temporarily transformed Manchester into the center of the musical universe, perfectly defining a generation of hedonism, tragic genius, and unbridled creativity.

The film will be followed by a live performance from Spanish Horses, a London-based, Parisian group. Their sound blends shoegaze haze, post-punk edge, and melodically ambitious 80s/90s indie songwriting.
