Beyond the Telescope: The Story of the Space Telescope Science Institute
About this Event
Join us in The Study’s Living Room for an engaging talk with David Herring, Head of the Office of Public Outreach at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI). Explore the institute’s fascinating origins, its legacy of groundbreaking discoveries, and the pivotal role it has played in transforming our understanding of the universe.
Fifty years ago, a bold proposal reimagined how scientists around the world could collaborate on space-based astronomy. That vision became reality in 1981 with the establishment of STScI on Johns Hopkins University’s Homewood Campus. Discover how this unprecedented approach to scientific research took shape, the challenges and milestones that defined its evolution, and its pivotal role in NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope mission. Through historical insights and groundbreaking astronomical discoveries, this talk reveals how an ambitious idea helped transform the way we explore the cosmos.
Admission is free. Complimentary light bites will be served, and drinks will be available for purchase. RSVPs are requested, though walk-ins are welcome on a space-available basis.
