Beyond the Purdah: The Influential Women of Shahjahanabad
Schedule
Sun Sep 08 2024 at 08:30 am to 11:30 am
Location
Old Delhi | New Delhi, DL
Throughout history, women’s expression of thought, creativity and individuality has been curbed by society. And throughout history, women have fought back. They have defied the society’s diktat which wanted to restrict their sphere of life and have dared to venture beyond.
The historical city of Shahjahanabad has been witness to some of the most incredible women who, against all odds, found their voice and left their mark in the field of politics, poetry, architecture and spiritualism.
Be it court intrigue or personal lives of Mughal emperors, princesses Jahanara and Roshanara played decisive roles. Overshadowed by Shahjahan’s love for Mumtaz, Begum Fatehpuri still left an indelible mark on the landscape of Shahjahanabad with her mosque. Begum Samru’s meteoric rise to power in a male-dominated society is a lesson that women can achieve their rightful place in the public sphere against all odds.
DelhiByFoot brings to you stories of these inspirational women, a glimpse of their challenges and achievements, their lives and loves; and how they created alternative spaces for themselves...spaces that they designed, ruled and held on to, despite severe opposition. Join us on our walk as we celebrate the women who, through sheer grit, went beyond the purdah.
The story-telling sessions will be done in English and some bits of Urdu/Hindi also.
