Books are an amazing way to connect to our history. They allow us to experience the lives of others in situations we may recognise and show us characters who respond to their racial identity in complex and sincere ways. Each month we will choose a book that delves into mixed identity, from novels to memoirs and nonfiction, whatever the group feels like next! Conversations around race can often be framed in black and white, so the books we will choose from explore mixedness as a spectrum. It will be a very relaxed, open discussion, using the book’s themes to think about our own stories. Spoilers will be avoided, so if you haven’t had time to read it all, don’t worry!
The first book we will read is Passing by Nella Larsen. Passing is a short read, a classic novel set in 1920s Harlem. It follows two mixed-race women, one of whom decides to live her adult life as white. Sign up by the 5th of December to recieve a free copy of Passing.
Radical Roasters is opening on the 18th of November, at 60-62 St Marks Road, Easton, Bristol. Radical Roasters is a specialty, micro coffee roastery. The owner Cat has taken the leap to start her own business. In the new year, she will be running free coffee workshops for marginalised folk to promote more diversity in the coffee industry.
