Join Visit Richmond Hill and the Wine & Words Book Club for a special evening of history, storytelling, and conversation as we welcome Julia-Ellen Craft Davis, the great-great-granddaughter of William and Ellen Craft, whose daring escape from slavery in 1848 remains one of the most remarkable stories in American history. Find out more about the Crafts' ties to Bryan County.
Born into slavery in Macon, Georgia, William and Ellen Craft devised an extraordinary plan to escape to freedom. Ellen, who was light-skinned, disguised herself as a wealthy white man, while William posed as her enslaved servant. Together, they traveled north to freedom, risking their lives along the way.
Their incredible journey is chronicled in Ilyon Woo's acclaimed book, Master Slave Husband Wife: An Epic Journey from Slavery to Freedom, and has received national attention.
This won't be your typical history lecture!
Julia-Ellen will share her family's story and personal insights into the Crafts' legacy, followed by an open, book-club-style discussion. We're creating a relaxed atmosphere where guests can ask questions, share thoughts, and enjoy the conversation.
📖 Reading the book beforehand is encouraged, but not required.
Free and open to the public! You do NOT have to be a member of a book club to attend.
