About this Event

No Longer Silent

In this remarkable memoir, Terace Garnier fearlessly shares her story of triumph over childhood rape and military sexual trauma. Through her unwavering strength, she illuminates a path towards healing and liberation, inspiring us all to reclaim our voices and find solace in our own journeys.

"No Longer Silent" is an invitation to embrace hope and discover the power that lies within each of us. With valuable insights and practical advice, Terace stands as a guiding light, offering support to survivors and paving the way for a community of understanding and compassion.

Battle Scars: Twenty Years Later: 3D Battalion 5th Marines Looks Back at the Iraq War and How It Changed Their Lives

Chip Reid was an embedded reporter with 3d Battalion 5th Marines as they fought their way from Kuwait to Baghdad in 2003, interviewing the young Marines within hours of brutal combat actions.

The most eye-opening, and terrifying, story in Chip Reid's career as a journalist was the six weeks he spent with 3d Battalion, 5th Marines, during the invasion of Iraq in 2003, as a correspondent for NBC News. Traveling shoulder-to-shoulder with the young Marines, he had unparalleled access, witnessing them in combat, and interviewing as many as he could persuade his bosses to put on air, allowing them to tell their war stories in their own words.

It took only 22 days for the Marines of 3/5 to fight their way to Baghdad, but the effects on those who fought have lasted a lifetime. They lost a number of their own in battle, and others suffered life-threatening injuries. Of those who returned - even if they avoided physical scars - many have had to find their own way through survivor's guilt and the nightmare of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, with all its attendant miseries.

Twenty years on, Chip sat down with the Marines of 3/5 once more. They told Chip inspiring stories of heroism in battle, of camaraderie and comrades lost, of patriotism and belief in mission, of recovery and success in both military and civilian life, and of the new appreciation for life that results from Post-Traumatic Growth. Visceral and searingly honest, this book is a tribute to the Marines for their service, and for the many sacrifices they made then, and that many still make today.

Authors Terace Garnier and Chip Reid are joining us on the Busboys stage to share stories of resilience and recovery, and encourage others to walk their own path toward healing. Copies of both books will be available for purchase during and after the event, and the authors will be signing following the program.

This event is free and open to all. Our program begins at 6:00 pm, and will be followed by an audience Q&A. Copies of NO LONGER SILENT and BATTLE SCARS will be available for purchase before and after the event. Please note that this event is in person and will not be livestreamed.

We ask that guests RSVP in order to receive direct updates about the event from Busboys and Poets Books

Terace Garnier was born in Bluefield, West Virginia, Terace Garnier (pronounced Ter- Ace, like the card, and Garn- YAY!) traveled with her father, a U.S. Marine, across the country. She never settles in one place too long as her endeavors have led to a life of travel and extraordinary experiences. This remarkable woman boasts a background as diverse as her talents, along with her passions for storytelling, art, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy. After temporarily pursuing an undergrad in Art History, Terace decided to explore her curiosity for storytelling by enlisting in the U.S. Air Force as an AFN reporter, anchor, and radio show host. During her time in Japan, she fearlessly covered a wide range of stories impacting military communities throughout Asia and Europe.

As a civilian, Terace earned her Master's Degree in Broadcast and Digital Journalism from Syracuse University before embarking on more globe-trotting adventures as one of the youngest network journalists for Fox News Channel. She specialized in uncovering the truth while presenting hidden facts in balanced and unbiased televised reports as a multimedia reporter. Some of her work includes ground coverage of the historic fires in Australia; the Afghanistan drawdown, live from the Pentagon; the Trump impeachment trial, live from Capitol Hill; and the Black Wall Street Massacre Centennial. Talk about a journalist on a mission!

This U.S. Air Force veteran’s journey took an unexpected turn when she found herself living out of her car while tirelessly pursuing a career as a network news correspondent in 2019. Most people might have thrown in the towel, but not Terace! She faced this colossal challenge head-on, showing the world what resilience and determination really mean – refusing to be defined by her circumstances. This determination led her to purchase her first home and become Newsy’s (Scripps News) first Pentagon correspondent.

Just when you thought her plate was full, she took on anchoring the esteemed Roland Martin Show, became a mentor to high school students, sharing her vast broadcast knowledge and inspiring the next generation of journalists, and pursued a life of pageantry and modeling. This led to raising money for pageant scholarships, mentoring sexual assault survivors, a building a vast new network of empowered women.

Terace's artistic flair and community service ambitions are even more awe-inspiring than her coming-to-age story. In 2022, she independently curated a virtual portrait gallery and auction with CBS anchor, Vladimir Duthiers. She raised thousands for homeless women veterans and their children which provided over 144 days of housing – talk about a heart of gold! You can still find some of her original works of art from the portrait gallery online, or spread throughout her home, along with her gorgeous, self-made epoxy resin serving trays and live edge wood. Her work not only helps raise awareness about homelessness among veterans but promotes the importance of work-life balance and setting boundaries to maintain one’s mental health.

Chip Reid began his career as a lawyer for Senator Joe Biden, eventually becoming General Counsel to Biden’s first presidential campaign.

At age 33 Chip switched to journalism and spent three decades as a TV news correspondent, covering everything from politics to war to human interest stories, traveling to all 50 states and nearly 50 countries, including Afghanistan, Iraq, China, Israel, and Gaza.

After retiring from the news business in 2021, Chip wrote “Battle Scars,” about the Marines he was embedded with during the invasion of Iraq in 2003, and how that experience changed their lives over the past two decades.

Chip lives in DC with his wife Nina and their two rescue Pit Bulls.
