Join us for an engaging presentation by Speech-Language Pathologist, Jackie Swirsky, on simplifying complex communication for people with developmental disabilities and autism! Together, we'll explore fun Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) tools and techniques that empower voices and foster connection. Participants will learn:

  • about communication and what is a communication disability;
  • how to bust myths related to Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC);
  • introductory knowledge of electronic and non electronic ways to support someone’s communication;
  • about modelling AAC to help someone be the best user of their system;
  • strategies that help you better communicate with people whose speech is difficult to understand, and
  • through practical hands on experiences, about various AAC systems.

Jackie Swirsky


Jackie Swirsky (she / her) is an experienced Speech Language Pathologist. After earning her Master’s degree from the University of Alberta, Jackie began her career in Edmonton with the Capital Health Authority. In 2005, Jackie returned to her hometown of Winnipeg and joined St. Amant, where she continues to make a profound impact in the field today.


Jackie specializes in providing services to adults with developmental disabilities and autism, focusing on Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and Dysphagia. Her passion for these areas is matched by her commitment to improving the quality of life for her clients. In 2018, Jackie expanded her expertise by becoming a provincial trainer with the National Task Group on Intellectual Disabilities and Dementia Practices, furthering her impact in the field of intellectual disabilities and dementia care.


Beyond her work as a clinician, Jackie is a proud mother, children’s book author, and an advocate for gender diversity. She regularly speaks on the subject, sharing her knowledge and personal experiences to foster understanding and inclusivity.


With a career marked by dedication, innovation, and advocacy, Jackie continues to be a leader in the field of speech-language pathology, advocating for the needs of vulnerable populations while inspiring others through her work and public speaking.



Attendee Experience

This workshop uses a combination of lecture, videos, small group discussions and hands on learning experiences.


The workshop will take place in the Ambassador A room.


Registration begins at 8:30 am.
