Beyond Body Talk > Parenting in the Age of Comparison
About this Event
75% of eating disorders begin in childhood, in shame and secrecy.
Up to 15% of (known) cases are deadly. So what can we do about it?

It begins before puberty and intensifies in early adolescence.
In elementary, children compare their lunchboxes. By puberty: their athleticism and beyond. Appearance-based bullying reportedly begins by 11, and it’s happening before smartphone or even social media access. How much affects academic focus, overall sense of wellbeing, or even safety?
Eating Disorders are more common than you think. 1 in 4 adolescents (8-25) have an eating disorder in Canada, and we rarely hear about them until it’s too late, if at all, given the lack of mental health literacy on this tricky topic. We will explore what families can do sooner, before concerns become costly, or devastating, crises. Gain insights on how eating disorders begin, the confidence to start difficult conversations sooner.
