About this Event

On September 17, the Department of Labor’s Women’s Bureau will host a screening of the documentary Still Working 9 to 5 in collaboration with the film’s creative team. When the original 9 to 5 film was released in 1980, it contributed to a cultural and societal movement that shed light on many of the inequitable and unjust realities that working women in the United States were experiencing in the workforce for decades. These issues—such as pay inequity, occupational segregation, sexual harassment, discrimination, and lack of access to quality and affordable care—are still present in the workplace to this day.

Still Working 9 to 5 examines this 40-year evolution of gender inequality and discrimination in the workplace since the release of the original film, overlayed with how women’s movements and labor movements have been driving progress in the United States. The Department of Labor is honored to be in collaboration with the Still Working 9 to 5 team to host this screening and talkback that will center on the important role of the labor movement and public policy in strengthening our workplaces, our economy, and our democracy as a whole. The post-screening panel will feature the filmmakers and other special guests and will discuss many of the important themes included in the film, as well as the past, present, and future of the fight for gender equity in our spaces of work.
