For the past five summers, longtime Bexar Grotto members Alan Montemayor and Cheryl Hamilton have volunteered as Preventative Search and Rescue (PSAR) rangers at Big Bend National Park. Working daily at the Chisos Basin Trailhead, they talk with visitors to ensure they have enough water, experience, and knowledge before hiking, while also assisting those in distress and coordinating through radio on hiker safety and wildlife sightings. Their daily “3 p.m. sweep” of the Window Trail has helped countless visitors overcome heat-related illnesses and has saved lives.
Alan and Cheryl, both passionate conservationists, bring decades of experience in sustainability, education, and outdoor stewardship. Alan, a mechanical engineer and retired Southwest Research Institute designer, also leads local environmental initiatives with the Sierra Club and the Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance. Together, they’ve transformed their 1958 San Antonio home into a model of sustainable living, complete with native landscaping, solar energy, and rainwater harvesting, and open it for tours to inspire others.
