Better Questions: Where Does Thinking Happen?
About this Event
A philosophy salon for curious adults. Come with your questions, leave with better ones. No background required, just curiosity.
Summary:
A stimulating salon-style evening on philosophy as a tool for freer, richer, life-illuminating conversation - a night for people who think about the big stuff in the shower and rarely get to say it out loud to anyone.
What if thinking is not something that happens behind your eyes? What if meaning does not live in the head at all but in hands and habits and tools and rooms and the practices we share with one another? What if the deepest things you know are things you could never quite write down?
What it is:
Better Questions is a salon-style gathering for curious adults: part talk, part performance, part guided conversation. It is for people who love big questions, serious play, and the pleasure of thinking out loud with other curious people.
For our second gathering, we turn to embodied philosophy - the quiet revolution shared by Ludwig Wittgenstein and Martin Heidegger, who barely acknowledged one another and yet arrived at the same revolt: the Western tradition has been looking for knowledge in the wrong place. You know how to ride a bicycle, how to recognize a friend by their walk from a block away, how to tell exactly when a hug is over, and you cannot fully say how. We'll spend the evening with that kind of knowing: the intelligence of practiced hands, the way skill outruns explanation, why meaning lives in what we do together rather than in private mental pictures.
What you'll leave with:
A few ideas big enough to chew on for weeks. Language for things you've felt but could never quite name. The rare experience of thinking out loud with people who are actually interested. And - if the night does its job - a better set of questions than the ones you walked in with.
You'll also leave having conversed with people, if you so choose. The evening opens with a lively introductory talk and a few big ideas made accessible, then opens up: time for Q&A and a full hour of guided, freeform conversation with other attendees. Come as you are, share as much or as little as you like - participation is always invited and never required.
You do not need a background in philosophy to attend. Come with questions, leave with better ones.
This is an experiment in thoughtful community: a room for people who want intellectual life to feel social, alive, generous, and real.
