Zach Hively will read from his new collection of short, humorous essays, CALL ME ZACH HIVELY BECAUSE THAT IS MY NAME. Few challenges are greater than navigating the world as a so-called adult. Yet Zach does his best to evade them all. The perils of rental housing? Finding friendship as a hermit who rather dislikes people? Bears? There’s nothing he can’t talk his way through—or out of—in these short essays.Betsy James will read from BREATHING STONE: LIVING SMALL IN A SOUTHWEST VILLAGE. For almost four years in the early 1990s, this writer, artist, and backcountry hiker rented part of an old adobe near the center of Placitas. She had worked for years with cultures very like those that had shaped Placitas—in Mexico, Albuquerque, Zuni Pueblo. She gave this place her best mortal attention, and recorded what she could. The result? "She bested Thoreau ... with a keener eye and a broader sensitivity to her environment" (Don Bullis).
Discussion and booksigning to follow. So bring your questions, and bring a friend. Your friend, someone else's friend, doesn't matter.
