About this Event
Betrayal Trauma refers to the profound emotional and psychological distress that arises when trust is broken within close or dependent relationships. It is uniquely damaging because it involves not only harm, but also a deep violation by those who were expected to offer protection, care, and support—relationships that should have been safe. Such betrayals can occur within families, intimate partnerships, or institutional settings.
This course explores the far-reaching impact of betrayal trauma, examining its effects on individuals as well as the societal and institutional responses that can either compound or alleviate harm. It is particularly relevant for those working with survivors of historical institutional abuse, including the Magdalene Laundries, Mother and Baby Homes, Workhouses, and other settings where systemic betrayal has caused enduring wounds, for example, those affected by the Troubles and the ongoing impact of Legacy.
The course will begin on Thursday 22nd January and continue on Friday 30th, Thursday 5th February & Thursday 19th February. Each session will be from 10.00 am - 4.00pm.
