LEONARD BERNSTEIN Chichester Psalms

Illuminare is Elaine Hagenberg’s first extended work, consisting of five movements for chorus and chamber orchestra. Using lesser-known sacred Latin, Greek, and English texts, the piece takes us through a season of beauty and goodness that has been disrupted by darkness and confusion. But as Light gradually returns, hope is restored, illuminating our future and guiding us in peace.

Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms is a choral work in three movements with text from the Hebrew Book of Psalms, each movement pairing a complete psalm with excerpts from another. It blends elements of traditional church choral music with Jewish liturgical styles. While Bernstein was known for his Broadway works, Chichester Psalms leans towards a more hopeful and accessible style, though it still retains some of his signature jazzy moments. The piece is known for its historical significance, as it was likely the first time music with Hebrew text was performed at the Vatican.

The performance is sponsored in part by Creighton University.
